Apache Deflate compression stats

General No Comments »

This is just frickin’ amazing. I started to doubt that the Apache deflate/gzip was really doing all that much in the way of bandwidth savings, so I decided to go thru and see just how much the compression was saving in transfer. Here’s what I found out.

File Name Original Gzipped
index.php 3.33kb 1.31kb
mav-style-halo-min.css 3.41kb 1.23kb
mavenous-halo.js 40.39kb 11.20kb
mavenous-min.js 11.45kb 3.59kb
favicon.ico 1.12kb 1.12kb
ibttn.gif 0.55kb 0.55kb
mav_bg.gif 0.10kb 0.10kb
mav_logo.png 3.62kb 3.62kb
page_bg.gif 0.15kb 0.15kb
TOTALS 64.12kb 22.87kb

That’s a total compression of about 64%, that’s just frickin’ amazing, as I stated earlier. I take back everything bad I ever said about Apache. I don’t exactly ever remember saying anything bad about them, but if I ever have, I take it back. :P

Anyway, this really excited me, and I thought I would share it with you all, you may carry on now.

Maveno.us Public Beta Version 1.0

Mavenous Updates No Comments »

Finally, Maveno.us has made it to version 1.0!
I am very pleased to be making this announcement, it has been a long time coming. I want to give a little history on Maveno.us, if I could. I’ve wanted to do an Ajax based lookup for a long time now, just never had the ummph to actually get it done. A couple of months ago I stumbled upon Ninjawords.com, and I was extremely impressed. I had never seen a online dictionary that was as responsive, and easy to use. Did I mention it was fast? Really fast. Fast like a ninja. :)

After using Ninjawords for a while, and being the programmer that I am, I found myself picking it apart thinking “how cool would it be if it did [insert something cool here]“. I really liked the way Ninjawords worked, and especially the speed at which it was able to define words; I just felt there was more that it could, or rather should do. I started off just wanting to be able to remove words from a word list once they’ve been defined. Then I wanted to be able to choose the correct spelling if I misspelled a word, or even simply just check the spelling of a word. That’s when I began Maveno.us.

I am still impressed with Ninjaword’s speed, and will more than likely never be quite as quick as it is. I understand that some speed is going to have to be sacrificed in order to provide the additional features I felt were missing. I have come to terms with this, and only cry about it every once in a while now.

There are still a lot of things that I feel Maveno.us can do, which is all laid out in the roadmap. Anyway, I’ll stop my rambling here, and get back to work.

Mavenous Version 1 to launch this week

Mavenous Updates No Comments »

It’s been about 2 months since I started this project, in between school, the family, and a few other projects, it’s about to come to fruition. I still have a long ways to go with what I want to accomplish with Mavenous, but this is a big milestone, and I can’t wait. There’s only one more major bug that needs to be worked out, and version 1 will be released public. Well, I guess when you get right down to it, it all ready is public, since everyone all ready has access to it… but that’s okay.

If you’ve checked out the road map, you’ll see where mavenous is headed in the future, and we are always open to user suggestions. I really hope to have other language support in the future, and welcome anyone well versed in other languages to contribute their time translating the site. There really isn’t all that much text that needs to be translated, and if anyone is interested, by all means, let us know!

Well folks, that’s all for now, gonna get back to coding, you are now free to move about your office chair.
